Although she is primarily self taught, always a student of her craft, she did study art at Indiana University and The University of New Mexico. Currently she is taking classes at the Charleston Center for Photography. Her passion has always been painting; acrylic, oil, and watercolor. One critic in Louisville called her paintings “luminous hieroglyphics”. Melissa has shown her work at galleries in Albuquerque, New Orleans, Louisville, Anchorage, and now Charleston. Melissa moved to beautiful Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina in 2007 with her husband and son and was deeply inspired (and occasionally disturbed) by the history, mystery and beauty of the Lowcountry. The urge to create was so overwhelming that the only reasonable media was digital photography. Digital photography allows her to be incredibly prolific and to capture, explore, manipulate and showcase her vision quickly. She shoots with a Nikon D5000 and has several types of photo manipulation software and applies a myriad of techniques to finalize her images. |
