My name is Christopher Crosby, and I'm 23 years old. I have resided in Summerville, SC my entire life, and believe that living in the lowcountry has helped to shape my tastes when it comes to art. I'm a second generation artist and being surrounded by the arts my entire life, I enjoy every aspect of it and have a great appreciation for what goes into a painting and other works. Currently, I'm a commercial graphics major at Trident Technical College where I have learned several different forms of visual arts, which has helped to cultivate my creativity and ingenuity. The medium which I really pride myself in is watercolor (gouache) via airbrush, which allows me to create works which convey an illusion of photorealism. In my art, I not only enjoy the finished product, but the challenge of the technical portion of creating a work of art, and this realism challenges me to become a better artist. My preferred palette is black and white, which allows me to show deeper contrast and a more believable image. My inspirations come from many areas throughout my life, first being my mother and her art, from her watercolors to more recent oil paintings, they have all brought a sense of naturalism. The masters such as William Claesz Heda and Diego Velasquez as well as more modern artists like Alberto Vargas, Dru Blair, and Craig Tracy, all have helped to influence my art. Through my own art, I try to bring forth the idea that everything is perhaps not as it seems. Numerous people have thought my works to be photographs, when in fact that it's a painting. I also try to get the point across that there's a certain amount of work and talent that goes into creating pieces that reveal such a high degree of realism, which I am so grateful to be able to bring this to an audience. I am currently showing in the Courtyard Art Gallery, and have exhibited in several shows and exhibitions including the small works exhibit at Robert Lange Studios, several Charleston Artist Guild shows as an exhibiting member, and the Folly Beach Arts Festival. |
